RVFD Hosts Emergency Vehicle Driver Training

The Roxton Volunteer Fire Department hosted a regional Emergency Vehicle Driver Training Instructor course July 25–26 at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds, bringing together firefighters and emergency medical personnel from departments across Texas for specialized training focused on the safe operation of emergency vehicles.
The two-day course, held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, was instructed by VFIS, an insurance and risk-management organization specializing in emergency services.
The instructor-level course is designed to prepare qualified personnel to teach Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) training within their own departments and surrounding communities. The program emphasizes safe emergency vehicle operations, driver responsibility, risk management and the skills necessary to properly train emergency vehicle operators.
A primary goal of hosting the course was to increase the number of trained EVOC instructors available locally and throughout the region. Having qualified instructors closer to home gives volunteer fire departments and EMS agencies greater access to essential driver training without requiring personnel to travel long distances to receive it.
Participants represented emergency service agencies from across Texas, including Roxton VFD, Powderly VFD, Angleton Fire Department, Hunt County Fire Department, Bastrop County EMS and Nevada Fire Department.
Emergency vehicle operation is one of the most important responsibilities entrusted to firefighters and EMS personnel. Operators must safely navigate large, heavy emergency vehicles while responding under demanding and often unpredictable conditions. Proper training helps protect not only emergency responders, but also the citizens and communities they serve.
By developing additional EVOC instructors, departments can provide consistent training to both new and experienced personnel while reinforcing safe driving practices throughout their organizations.
Roxton VFD hosted the training as part of its continuing commitment to education, preparedness and cooperation among emergency service agencies. Bringing specialized instructor-level training to Lamar County also provides smaller volunteer departments greater access to professional training opportunities while strengthening emergency response capabilities throughout the region.
