City Council Discusses Localized Sewer Problems

by Penny Kelly

January Meeting

In attendance: Mayor Paul Helms. Councilmembers: Stacy Crabtree, Debbie Hindman, Gene Jones, Cody Jones and Secretary: Christy Chewning

The meeting came to order with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silence.

No members of the public submitted questions or comments.

Regular agenda items followed: Approval of December meeting minutes, review of bank statements and review of past due bills.

The next agenda item was to discuss the sewer problems on Pecan St. behind KBA. At the time of the meeting, the city employees were routinely cleaning out the sewer lines to mitigate sewage back up. The company contacted to address the problem was not getting to the job. Because of the magnitude of the problem, special equipment and skills are necessary. The sewer problem involves vintage clay pipes that have failed. A trench box is required as the repair area is 14 feet underground.

The City Secretary was given several leads to follow up to get bids on the project.

A citizen came in late to the meeting. She had a complaint about her water bill and about utility policies. In working with the City Secretary outside of the meeting, it was determined she was overcharged for service. The council awarded the citizen a refund of the overcharge.

The meeting was adjourned.
