Mural Progress Obvious at a Glance

by Shirley Cooper

Excitement is growing as the mural restoration progress is increasingly obvious to even those who only glance toward it while traveling Honey Grove Street. On closer inspection, the original design elements have be redefined, and details stand out with the bright new paint.

The lettering for the mural, “Roxton, Built to Endure,” has been added at the suggestion of muralist David Freeman in the early stages of design talks. Mr. Freeman asked if the city had a logo. And the answer was “Yes, we do, although it is only seen currently on city stationary.” Mr. Freeman took the logo wording from the stationary and it now is on permanent display on the mural. People have commented how much they like the addition of the wording and especially the prominence of the town name.

Everyone commenting is pleased to see new life breathed into the decaying mural. They are just as pleased that the mural wall has been strengthened and repaired and will be there for Roxtonites and visitors to enjoy for years to come.

Mr. Freeman anticipates, weather permitting, the completion of the mural will happen this month.

The mural committee would like to thank everyone who donated to make this project a reality. Roxton may be old and our town may be small, but ambitious projects like the mural restoration are confirmation of the big hearts of Roxton citizens — both past and present.

It is hoped the next big restoration — the Victorian lights — will, with your help, become a reality as well. Wouldn’t it be great to have all the town’s lights burning again by Christmas? The campaign to light Roxton is underway. Please send your donation to City of Roxton with the memo line Keep the Lights On. The project received three generous donations this week.

In the meantime, prepare for the unveiling of the completed Roxton mural in short order. While the mural will be visible to all upon completion, a formal dedicated will likely be postponed until fears of spreading coronavirus are mitigated.
