Lamar County 4-H Competes in Food Challenge

The 4-H has been slowly getting back to normal by having contests, practices and meetings. March 26th was the District 4 4-H Food Challenge held at Hopkins County Civic center. 4-Hers across the district competed. Lamar County had 3 teams, in each age division participate. The Junior Team was comprised of 4 4-Hers with a team name of Fantastic Four, Emmie Anderson, Landri Dawson, Addison Bedford and Emma Bedford. The Intermediate team, Red Hot Chili Peppers, also had 4, Scout Nation, Payton Moss, Emma Cheatwood, and Chloe Gray. The senior team, Whisk Takers, a team of 4, Aubree Phillips , Autumn Phillips, Cadie Gray and Reese Bassano. The teams were given a mystery bag of ingredients and 40 minutes to make something using proper food safety techniques. They also must write out the food safety protocol used, nutrition in the dish, preparation steps and cost per serving. Each team had a different item in their bag as well as category. Juniors had to make a side dish, Intermediates had to make a healthy dessert and seniors had make a main dish. Once the 40 minutes is complete teams are taken to present their dish to the judges and speak on the 4 areas they wrote about for the dish. The Juniors placed 3rd, intermediates placed 2nd and seniors placed 1st and won the Spirit award, which is given to the team that works the best together. The seniors will advance to College Station to compete June 9th in the State 4-H food Challenge, where they will compete against other 1st place teams from across the state.
